Christmas Wrap-up

While we didn't have the Christmas we planned it was a good one. Isaac was sick all week, we were exhausted and all travel plans were cancelled. We were supposed to go to my mom's for Christmas and my dad's the day after but spent all our time at home. Thankfully my mom packed all her things, including food (yay! I hadn't been to the store all week) and came up here to celebrate with us and our little patient. Isaac was off and on with feeling bad but we were able to take a few pictures with a happy baby. Hope everyone had a very merry Christmas.

We visited Santa yesterday. Isaac did great, no tears! I think Isaac is on the Nice List this year. He's been a very good boy!

Oh My Yum! Part 2

Last month over on Bake at 350 Bridget posted a recipe for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars. I made these last week and OH MY are they yummy! Here's the link to the recipe on her blog Bake at 350. Bridget is a great baker but she is known most for her cute, cute cookies. She made the cookies for my out of town wedding guests a couple years ago.

While I was packing our bags this afternoon at my mom's, Isaac found a fun new toy.

Oh My Yum!!!

The other night I made this for dinner. It's a bad picture but oh my yum!!! It's called penne with cream, asparagus and pancetta. Yes, CREAM. YUM! It's from this cook book (click on book to seen the link) that Scott's parents gave us for Christmas last year. I've been wanting to cook from it forever. The couple who wrote the book are clients of Scott's parents and the Sevs eat at their restaurant in Rhode Island all the time. It was such and easy recipe and so so good. We ate half of it in one sitting. It's basically cheese and cream mixed in with pasta and asparagus. Top it with pancetta and baked. I love baked pasta.

We bought Isaac a set of soft tools for his birthday. He LOVES them. While he loves all of them I think his favorite is the drill. Or really I should say, the drill is his favorite when we make silly drill sounds. Isaac is working on hammering the barn in this picture.

Snip, Snip

Isaac had his first haircut on Saturday. I was nervous with it being Halloween. Luckily it was a treat and not a trick. Isaac did fantastic. Ms. Martha did a great job. It was bittersweet for me. He's getting to be such a big boy. All the "firsts" are coming way too fast.

mmm King Ranch Chicken

A couple of you asked for the King Ranch Chicken recipe from Isaac's birthday party so here it is. I wish now I had taken a picture but oh well, you'll just have to imagine its tastiness. This was my grandmama's recipe.

Ingredients:

• 1 package corn tortillas
• 1 3lb fryer boiled and boned OR 4 bone-in breasts baked (we used breasts for the party)
• 3-4 Tbs chili powder
• 1 Tbs cumin
• 1 onion
• bell pepper
• 1 clove of garlic
• 1/2 lb sharp Cracker Barrel cheese + more for topping (we also add pepper jack cheese)
• 1 can cream of celery soup
• 1 can cream of chicken soup
• 1/2 can hot rotel tomatoes OR for kid-friendly diced stewed tomatoes

Directions:

Saute onion garlic and pepper until soft. Add chili powder, cumin, soups and tomatoes. Stir until well blended.

Make layers in a casserole dish

• tortillas
• chicken
• soup mixture
• grated cheese

Cover with foil and bake about 30 minutes at 350F until bubbly

We took Isaac to the pumpkin patch at church Saturday afternoon. He was a little confused but we ended up with a few good pictures.

Auntie Sheryl gave Isaac jumbo magnetic letters for his birthday. He LOVES them! His favorite letter is O. He always finds the two Os first and crawls around with them. Thank you Sheryl!!!

Little Fighter

Isaac looks like he's been in a fight. Poor guy had a run-in today with a bathroom cabinet. I'm sure it's the first of many. Hopefully it won't turn purple over night. I guess his 1 year portraits will commemorate his first shiner.

Birthday Bash!!!

My mom and I had a great time decorating the cake and cupcakes last night.

This was my second and final attempt at icing Isaac's little cake. I need to practice my piping.

Isaac went after the cake after a couple of minutes of "is it really okay for me to put my hands in this?" He had it up to his elbows and not one drop on the floor. It all went straight to the mouth.

We had such a fun time today at Isaac's First Birthday Party. We can't thank everyone enough for all the great gifts. I think my favorite part of the day was looking around and seeing all of my childhood friends together again. (we missed you Michelle) It was a special day spent with special people. Here are just a couple of pictures from the day. I'll post more this week.

my favorite smile is back!

Isaac has made a very speedy recovery. His fever has been gone for 24 hours and his appetite is back! His smile and laughter returned late Monday evening and he's been playing like crazy ever since then. He's still pretty tired, as you can see from the photo, but he's definitely a little trooper.

What an experience this was. Unfortunately we will probably go through it many more times. Our pedi said that more than likely Isaac will have febrile seizures a couple times a year. Anytime he has a fever he is at risk to have another. 5% of babies are affected by these seizures, that's 1 in 20 children! I had no idea. I hope that no one has to ever go through this with their child. Isaac is fine now and these seizures have no long term effects but it is the scariest 2-5 minutes you'll ever go through.

So I've experienced the scariest moment of my life. Isaac had a high fever Saturday after waking from his nap. We gave him some medicine and it went down for a while but spiked up again over 103 that afternoon. I called the doctor and followed his advice and hope for the best. About 20 minutes later Isaac became unresponsive and then stopped breathing. His little lips turned blue and his skin turned gray. I thought I was loosing him. I called 911 after giving him a couple of breaths mouth to mouth . He started gasping for air and by the time the ambulance arrived his color was back and he was responsive. THANK GOD!

The last 24 hours were spent in the ER where Isaac had to endure IVs, swabs, pokes, and prods. We learned that Isaac had a febrile seizure which is somewhat common in infants with high fevers. He is still battling the fever and we are on a strict regimen of motrin and tylenol for the next 24 hours as well as an antibiotic for a throat infection (no flu). The nurses and doctor at the hospital were great and really helped keep Isaac comfortable and calm.

We came home this afternoon and he seems to be doing well. We are all exhausted. Isaac is asleep with his Hammy in the glider, Daddy's in bed resting. I have to write, blog and talk about this to help me cope. I keep seeing Isaac lying there on the floor as we waited for the paramedics to arrive. He just looked at me with empty eyes until his breathing returned to normal. I've never been so terrified in my life. How precious our children are. How easily it can all be taken away. I don't ask for this often but please pray for Isaac to make a speedy recovery. I miss his sweet little smile.

Friday morning Scott was holding Isaac while I was doing my hair. Isaac looked over at me and said, "Mama." My heart just melted right there.

Isaac helped celebrate Owen's first birthday over the weekend. He had a blast playing with Owen, Maggie and Mac. Maggie's going to have her hands full when she gets older with all these boys around. We had a great time. Happy Birthday Owen!!!
